Re: Chimera Investment downgraded
Chimera is not exactly "run by the same folks who run NLY"-- it is also under the Fidac umbrella, but management is different. Chimera is "the kids table" for NLY management. In an extraordinary bit of nepotism, NLY set up CIM as a vehicle for children NLY principals, and then bailed them out when they promptly sunk their ship. At Annaly, longtime Chief Investment Officer Wellington Denahan has done a terrific job . . . but the Denahan who's at CIM is "Alexandra Denahan" whose modest resume includes only a degree from Florida Atlantic University, and experience as a "business consultant" in Fort Lauderdale No sooner was CIM up and running than it blew up, and had to be bailed out by NLY. Its a highly conflicted and dubious story. Bear in mind, too, that NLY invests only in US Government Agency obligations -- and as such, NLY/Fidac/CIM has little experience in evaluating credit quality, and Chimera is very much exposed to credit quality. If you compare the performance of NLY to CIM, you'll see a massive divergence. Its not an accident . .
